Pocket-Sized Electric Fence Tester

The aFe Power Zareba DEFT #2 is a handheld digital tester built for farmers and property owners who need to check fence voltage quickly. It reads from 0.5 to 19.9 kV on any wire type, giving a three-digit value on a backlit screen. The rugged ABS plastic case fits in a pocket for daily fence walks. A 9 V battery is required but not supplied.

Voltage Range and Display Limits

The tester only reports voltages between 0.5 and 19.9 kV, so very low leaks or extremely high spikes fall outside the readable window. The three-digit LCD cannot show decimal values beyond the single tenth place. Backlighting helps at night, yet bright sunlight can still wash out the digits. No data logging or alarm functions are included.

Simple Setup With One Common Oversight

Insert a 9 V battery, touch the probe to the live wire and the ground clip to earth, then read the display. The most frequent issue is forgetting the battery, since none is included in the box. A weak cell will cause erratic or blank readings, so carry a spare. The ABS housing resists drops, but the probe tip can bend if forced against stiff wire.

Questions about this item

Does the tester cover the full 0.5 to 19.9 kV range or is a narrower model available?

The DEFT #2 reads the full 0.5 to 19.9 kV span in three-digit steps; no other range variant is offered for this model.

What does the 19.9 kV top reading mean when I hook it to my fence line?

It shows the peak voltage present on the wire at that moment, up to 19.9 kV, so you can confirm the charger is delivering full output.

The tester contacts the wire directly — does that limit the wire types I can check?

The probe works on any electric-fence wire, including steel, aluminium, polywire and high-tensile, without an adapter.
