Pick the tool family by the system you are repairing

Auto tools are organized by the system you are working on. Electrical work needs multimeters and electrical testers plus jump starters and battery maintainers; brake, cooling, fuel and engine jobs each have their own presses, testers and adapters. Generic wrench and socket sets cover the rest. Specialty tools are often vehicle-specific, so check that the listed fits include your make and engine.

Drive sizes, metric or inch, and safe lifting

For sockets and ratchets, drive size sets strength: 1/4 inch for small fasteners, 3/8 inch for general work, 1/2 inch for suspension and wheel nuts. Six-point sockets grip worn bolts better; twelve-point ones engage faster. Newer vehicles are mostly metric while older American cars use inch sizes, so a combined set is safest. A jack lifts but should not hold the car: use rated jack stands on level ground, and a torque wrench for specified fasteners.

Questions about Auto Repair Tools and Garage Equipment

Do I need metric or SAE tools for my car?
Most vehicles built in recent decades use mainly metric fasteners, older American-made cars use inch sizes, and some use both. A combined metric and inch set covers either case; check the service information if you are unsure which sizes your vehicle uses.
Do I need a torque wrench for car repairs?
For wheel nuts, brakes, suspension and engine fasteners, yes. Manufacturers publish torque values, and tightening too little or too much can cause leaks, warped parts or loose wheels. A click-type wrench that covers the range you use is the common choice.
Is a hydraulic jack enough to work under a car?
No. A jack is for lifting only. Once the vehicle is raised, support it on rated jack stands placed at the maker's lift points on level ground, and check that the stand rating exceeds the load. Never rely on the jack alone.
