Classroom Heavy-Duty Sharpener

The AFMAT PS13 is a corded electric pencil sharpener built for high-volume use in schools, offices and homes. It accepts standard No.2 graphite and coloured pencils from 6.5 mm to 8 mm diameter. A UL-listed motor (Model S230) powers a helical blade that starts automatically when a pencil is inserted. The unit weighs 1.22 kg and measures 10.3 x 11.6 x 24.8 cm.

Sustained Use Behaviour

The manufacturer states the sharpener can handle over 10000 sharpening cycles and up to 100 pencils in one session without overheating. Each pencil takes roughly 3 to 5 seconds to reach a sharp point. If the pencil is pressed too hard the motor emits a humming noise and stops cutting, so a light feed is required for continuous operation.

Installation and Common Issues

Plug the US 120 V 60 Hz cord into a wall outlet and the sharpener is ready; no software or drivers are involved. The shavings tray pulls out for emptying. The main issue reported is jamming when extra-soft-core coloured pencils are used, which the maker advises against. Keeping the blade clear of wax build-up prevents most stoppages.

Questions about this item

How loud is the motor during a full day of classroom sharpening?

The upgraded motor sharpens in 3-5 seconds; pushing too hard makes a hum noise and stops sharpening.

Does the PS13 need anything besides a standard US wall outlet to operate?

It plugs into a 120 V 60 Hz corded US plug; no batteries or extra accessories required.

Will the helical blade handle the same No. 2 and colored pencils I already stock?

Designed for 6.5-8 mm graphite and colored pencils; extra-soft cores may jam the blade.
