8-Port 10/100 Mbps Desktop Switch

The Amer.com S8 is an unmanaged Ethernet switch with eight auto-negotiating RJ45 ports. It connects computers, printers and other wired devices in a small office or home network. The unit draws power from an external 7.5V DC adapter and operates silently without a fan.

Fast Ethernet Speed and Distance Limits

Each port runs at 10 or 100 Mbps using IEEE 802.3 and 802.3u standards with CSMA/CD access. The 100 Mbps ceiling caps throughput well below modern gigabit or multi-gigabit expectations. Standard twisted-pair cabling remains limited to 100 metres per segment and the 1K MAC address table suits only modest device counts.

Upgrade from 10 Mbps Hubs or Fewer Ports

The switch replaces legacy 10 Mbps hubs or smaller port-count switches, adding full-duplex capability and auto MDI/MDIX to remove crossover cable hassles. The jump is worthwhile when you need more than four wired connections and can accept 100 Mbps as the maximum link speed. It does not serve networks that require gigabit bandwidth, VLANs, PoE or managed features.
