Five-port desktop switch

The Amer Networks SG5 is an unmanaged Gigabit switch with five RJ45 ports that auto-negotiate at 10/100/1000Mbps. It is built for home offices or small businesses that need a simple way to add wired connections for PCs, laptops, printers and other peripherals. The plastic casing supports desktop or wall-mount placement. No configuration is required to start expanding a local area network.

Plug-and-play installation

Setup consists of connecting power and Ethernet cables; the switch automatically handles MDI/MDIX crossover on every port. LED indicators show link activity, port speed and power status for quick verification. The fanless design means silent operation with no moving parts to fail. The only common issue is exceeding the 100-metre cable limit for twisted-pair runs, which will cause link loss or errors.

Sustained load behaviour

IEEE 802.3x flow control helps maintain reliable data transfer when all five ports are active continuously. The unit operates within a temperature range of 32 to 104 degrees Fahrenheit without active cooling. Because it is unmanaged, there is no traffic prioritisation or storm control, so heavy multicast or broadcast streams can consume bandwidth across all ports. Performance remains steady as long as the aggregate throughput stays within the 1000Mbps per-port ceiling.
