12V Battery Tester and Alternator Analyser
The ANENG BT172 is a compact voltmeter designed to test 12V batteries in cars, motorcycles, trucks, boats and other 12V vehicles. It measures voltage with a stated accuracy of approximately 0.01V and can be used with the battery installed or removed. The unit weighs 0.09 kilograms and operates from its own internal power source.
Three Testing Modes with LED Status
The tester offers three selectable modes: a centre position that shows real-time voltage on the backlit LCD while LEDs indicate alternator condition, and a 12V position that displays battery voltage and status via LEDs. Red and black alligator clips connect directly to the battery terminals for in-vehicle or bench testing. Reverse-connection protection prevents damage if the clips are swapped.
4–30V DC Range with Over-Voltage Indication
The measurement range spans 4V to 30V DC; the screen displays 'LO' below 4V and 'HI' above 30V to flag out-of-range conditions. No cooling fan is present, so operation is silent. The device draws minimal current from its internal supply during normal use, making it suitable for quick diagnostic checks without draining the vehicle battery.

Questions about this item
How long can the ANENG BT172 stay connected to a 12V battery before the 4–30V DC range limit forces a disconnect?
The tester operates continuously within the 4–30V DC range; it shows LO below 4V or HI above 30V but has no stated time limit for sustained connection.
Does the BT172 generate noticeable heat or fan noise during all-day alternator testing?
The unit has no fan and weighs 0.09 kg; it runs silently with negligible heat during extended use.
What power source must I already have to operate the BT172?
The tester draws power directly from the 12V battery under test; no separate battery or mains supply is required.
