Compact desktop for everyday work

The 2024 Mac mini is a five-by-five-inch desktop computer built around the Apple M4 chip with a 10-core CPU and 10-core GPU. It comes with 16GB of unified memory and 256GB of SSD storage. The silver enclosure is designed to sit beside a monitor or tuck into a small space. It is aimed at students and home-office users who need a capable macOS machine without a built-in display.

Simple setup with front and rear ports

The unit arrives ready to run; connect power, a display via HDMI or Thunderbolt, and peripherals through the rear Gigabit Ethernet, Thunderbolt and the new front-facing USB-C ports and headphone jack. No internal assembly is required because memory and storage are not user-upgradeable. The only common issue is forgetting that the 256GB drive cannot be expanded later, so plan cloud or external storage from the start.

Check display, network and storage needs

Verify that your monitor accepts HDMI or Thunderbolt video input and that you have the appropriate cable. Confirm your router or switch provides a wired Gigabit Ethernet connection if you prefer wired networking. Finally, assess whether 256GB of fixed internal storage is sufficient for your applications and files, or whether you will rely on external drives or cloud services.
