Tower, small form factor or tiny: space against upgrade room

A tower holds a standard motherboard, a full-size power supply and room for a full-length graphics card and several drives, so it is the easiest to upgrade. Small form factor and slim desktops shrink the case but accept only low-profile cards and a smaller supply. Tiny, mini and ultra-small models are about the size of a thick book, run from an external power brick and often have no card slot at all. They mount behind a monitor, save desk space, and run best under light loads.

Memory modules, power supply and brand-specific parts

Tiny and mini PCs use SO-DIMM memory, the short laptop-style module, while towers and many slim desktops take full-size DIMMs, so check the module type, DDR4 or DDR5, and the number of slots before planning an upgrade. Storage is usually M.2 or a 2.5 inch drive in small cases and has more bays in towers. Branded desktops sometimes use non-standard power supplies or motherboard connectors, which limits what you can swap. Count the video outputs if you plan to run several monitors.

Questions about Tower, Slim and Tiny Desktop PCs

Can I add a graphics card to a small form factor PC?
Only a low-profile card, and only if the power supply can feed it. Many slim cases have no extra power connector, so the card must run from the slot alone. Tiny PCs usually have no card slot at all.
Why do tiny PCs use laptop-style memory?
They use SO-DIMM modules, the short laptop format, to fit the small case. Towers take full-size DIMMs. Check the type, DDR4 or DDR5, the number of slots and the maximum capacity before upgrading.
Is a tower quieter than a compact PC?
Often, because a bigger case moves air with larger, slower fans. Compact PCs have little airflow and use small fans, which can get audible under load. Low-power processors keep tiny models quiet at idle.
