  • 5" desktop form factor with included AC adapter powers the drive reliably
  • FIPS validated design meets stringent security requirements for sensitive data

Secure high-capacity desktop drive

The Apricorn ADT-3PL256F-8000 is an 8 TB external solid-state drive in a 3.5-inch desktop enclosure. It connects via USB 3.0 and includes a 12 V AC adapter for power. The drive is built for users who need large, transportable storage with hardware-based security features.

Suited for offices handling sensitive files

This drive suits professionals who must keep confidential data on a physical device that they control. It is not for buyers who want a bus-powered drive they can run from a laptop port alone. It is also not for users who need a 2.5-inch form factor for tighter spaces.

USB 3.0 host interface

The single specification that decides fit is the USB 3.0 host interface. Your system must provide a USB 3.0 port and the drive must be connected to its included 12 V AC adapter to operate. Verify both requirements before purchase.

Questions about this item

Will the 256-bit AES hardware encryption module ever need replacement or servicing?

The encryption is built into the Aegis Padlock DT FIPS controller inside the sealed 3.5" enclosure and has no user-serviceable parts; the whole drive would be replaced if it failed.

What thermal limit appears first when the 8 TB drive runs continuously over USB 3.0?

The aluminium case dissipates heat from the internal drive, so sustained writes are typically limited by the USB 3.0 interface speed before the chassis reaches its thermal ceiling.

How much power does the 12 V adapter draw and does the drive make noise during all-day operation?

The included 12 V AC adapter powers the 3.5" mechanism; the drive spins silently with no fan, so only faint seek sounds are audible in a quiet room.
