USB generation sets the speed: 5, 10 or 20 Gbit/s

A portable SSD is only as fast as the weakest link. USB 3.2 Gen 1 runs at 5 Gbit/s, about 400 MB/s in practice; Gen 2 at 10 Gbit/s reaches roughly 1,000 MB/s; Gen 2x2 at 20 Gbit/s and USB4 go to 2,000 MB/s and beyond. The drive, the cable and the port on your computer must all support the same level, otherwise the link falls back to the slower speed. Many laptops lack 20 Gbit/s ports, so a fast drive may run at 10 Gbit/s there.

Quoted read speeds, such as 1,050 or 2,000 MB/s, are best cases. Sustained writes of large files can drop once the drive's fast cache fills or it heats up, and smaller capacities often sustain less than larger ones. If you edit video directly from the drive, look for sustained write figures, not just the headline read speed, and a metal body that sheds heat.

Capacity, rugged ratings and what you plug it into

Capacities run from 256 GB to 8 TB. Pick by what you carry: a few documents and photos need little, while video projects fill a terabyte quickly. Some models add rubberised shells and drop ratings or IP dust and water ratings, worth having if the drive travels in a bag. A USB-C drive plugs into modern laptops, tablets and many phones, or into older ports with a Type-C to Type-A cable. Format it as exFAT to use it with both Windows and macOS.

Questions about Portable SSDs: USB Speed, Capacity and Durability

Will a fast portable SSD run at full speed on my laptop?
Only if the laptop's port and the cable support the drive's USB generation. A 20 Gbit/s drive on a 5 Gbit/s port still works, but at the port's slower speed. Check the port specification in your laptop's manual.
Should I choose a portable SSD or a flash drive?
For large files, a portable SSD: it writes far faster and sustains it, and comes in bigger capacities. A USB flash drive is smaller and fine for documents and occasional transfers, but slows down on big copies.
Can I use a portable SSD with a phone or games console?
Phones and tablets with USB-C can often use an exFAT drive, but support depends on the device and its software. Consoles list the drive sizes, speeds and formats they accept, so check your console's rules first.
