Hardware-encrypted portable SSD

The Apricorn Aegis Padlock A25-3PL256-S256F is a 256 GB external solid-state drive with built-in hardware encryption. It targets users who must protect data at rest without installing management software on every host machine. The integrated keypad handles authentication before the drive becomes visible to the operating system.

Plug-and-play with optional power cable

Connection uses the integrated USB 3.0 cable and a supplied Y-auxiliary USB 3.0 power cable for hosts that cannot deliver enough current on a single port. No driver installation is required on Windows, macOS or Linux. The most common issue is insufficient port power causing the drive to disconnect during heavy write workloads.

USB 3.0 bandwidth limits sustained throughput

Sequential read and write speeds top out at 180 MB/s, which is well below the internal capability of the flash but matches the practical ceiling of the USB 3.0 interface. Large-file transfers will saturate the link, while small random I/O sees proportionally lower throughput. The 8 MB buffer smooths burst traffic but cannot overcome the interface bottleneck.
