FIPS 140-2 Level 3 portable storage

The Apricorn Aegis Fortress L3 is a hardware-encrypted desktop external hard drive built for users who must keep sensitive data secure while travelling. Its onboard keypad handles PIN authentication without any software installation, so the drive works on any system with a powered USB port. The 256-bit AES XTS encryption operates on the fly and protects data at rest, meeting NIST's highest portable-device validation. Professionals handling regulated information can carry up to 16 TB of capacity in a pocket-sized enclosure.

Rugged aluminium enclosure with USB 3.1 Gen 1

The drive measures 7.920 x 6.080 x 2.720 cm and weighs 6.0000 kg, fitting easily into a briefcase while surviving daily transport. A USB 3.1 (3.0) interface delivers ultra-fast transfer speeds over a standard Type-A connection, requiring no external power adapter. Because authentication happens on the hardware keypad, the Fortress L3 functions with embedded equipment, kiosks or legacy PCs that lack a keyboard or operating-system drivers. The sealed, tamper-evident chassis resists physical attack and environmental stress.

Cross-platform, software-free operation

No drivers, utilities or cloud services are bundled; the drive is ready the moment you set a PIN. It presents as a standard mass-storage device to Windows, Linux, Mac, Android, Symbian and Chrome OS alike. Administrators can enforce policies such as read-only mode or brute-force wipe without installing management software on each endpoint. The absence of software components eliminates a common attack surface and ensures compatibility with air-gapped or locked-down systems.

Questions about this item

What does the USB 3.0 interface cap the transfer speed at in practice?

The drive uses USB 3.1 Gen 1, also known as USB 3.0, so real-world throughput tops out at the 5 Gbit/s signalling rate of that standard.

What physical space and weight should I allow for the 7.920 × 6.080 × 2.720 cm enclosure?

The rugged chassis measures 7.92 cm wide, 6.08 cm deep and 2.72 cm high, weighing 6.0 kg, so it needs a sturdy flat surface or bag pocket that can support that mass.

How do I set up the hardware keypad PIN before the drive becomes readable, and what step do users often skip?

Power the drive, enter the default admin PIN, then immediately create a new user PIN; skipping the admin-to-user handover leaves the drive on the factory code, which is the common mistake.
