4 TB desktop external storage

The Western Digital Elements drive provides four terabytes of add-on capacity in a compact desktop form factor. It connects through a USB 3.0 Micro-B interface and arrives formatted NTFS for Windows 10, 8.1 and 7. The unit is ready for immediate plug-and-play use on compatible PCs.

Build integration and connectivity

The drive requires an AC adapter and the supplied USB cable, so a free mains socket and a USB 3.0 or 2.0 port are needed. It frees space on the internal boot drive by offloading photos, music, videos and large files. Reformatting is required before use with operating systems other than Windows.

Thermals, noise and power

The enclosure relies on passive cooling with no internal fan, so operation is silent. Power is drawn from the external adapter rather than the host USB port, leaving the computer’s own power budget unaffected. The drive runs at typical desktop hard-drive temperatures during normal file transfers.

Questions about this item

What limits sustained transfer speed on this WD Elements 4TB drive?

The USB 3.0 Micro-B interface caps maximum transfer rates; the drive delivers ultra-fast speeds only when connected to a USB 3.0 port.

How much heat or noise does the drive produce during all-day operation?

The compact desktop enclosure has no fan; it runs silently and relies on passive cooling, so heat stays low during continuous use.

What must I already own for this drive to work out of the box?

A Windows 10, 8.1 or 7 PC with a USB 3.0 or 2.0 port and a free mains socket for the included AC adapter.
