ARRIS Surfboard G36 DOCSIS 3.1 Gateway

The ARRIS Surfboard G36 combines a DOCSIS 3.1 cable modem with an AX3000 Wi-Fi router in one unit. It is built for households that want to replace a rented gateway and gain multi-gigabit wired ports. The device supports internet plans up to 1.2 Gbps and works with major U.S. cable providers.

Thermals, Noise and Power Draw

The integrated design runs without added cooling hardware and draws power from a single adapter. Typical operation stays quiet enough for a living-room shelf or home office desk. No fan noise or thermal throttling is reported under normal streaming and gaming loads.

Build Quality and Connectors

Four 2.5 Gbps Ethernet ports allow direct links to PCs, consoles or a mesh system without a separate switch. The vertical stance saves bench space and the coaxial input threads securely for the provider line. Coverage reaches up to 2,500 sq ft for whole-home wireless.

Questions about this item

How do I activate the G36 with my cable provider, and what step causes the most failures?

Connect the coaxial cable, power the unit, then call your provider with the MAC address on the label; skipping the provider call leaves the modem stuck in registration.

Which part of the G36 will need replacement first as it ages?

The internal power supply and cooling fan are the only moving or heat-stressed components; capacitors typically outlast the DOCSIS 3.1 service life.

What throughput ceiling hits first when the G36 runs flat-out for hours?

The 1.2 Gbps DOCSIS 3.1 WAN limit caps sustained speeds before the four 2.5 Gbps LAN ports or AX3000 Wi-Fi radios saturate.
