Z390 Phantom Gaming 4 for 8th and 9th Gen Intel Core

This ATX motherboard uses the Intel Z390 chipset and an LGA 1151 socket limited to the 300-series pinout. It accepts 8th and 9th Generation Intel Core processors and is not compatible with earlier LGA 1151 CPUs. The board targets builders who want a full-size platform for current-gen Coffee Lake Refresh chips.

PCIe 3.0 lanes and M.2 bandwidth limits

Two PCI Express 3.0 x16 slots operate at x16 when only the primary is used and split to x16 and x4 when both are populated. Three PCIe 3.0 x1 slots provide additional expansion. Two Ultra M.2 sockets support PCIe Gen3 x4 for up to 32Gb/s throughput and also accept SATA M.2 modules; using a SATA M.2 drive disables one SATA3 port each.

Check CPU generation and memory kit compatibility

Verify that the installed processor is an 8th or 9th Generation Intel Core part, as older LGA 1151 CPUs will not work. Consult the vendor memory support list before buying DDR4 kits, because rated speeds above 2666 MT/s require overclocking and specific module validation. Ensure the chassis can accommodate an ATX form factor.

How it compares

Questions about this item

Which Intel Core generations does this board accept?

It supports 9th and 8th Gen Intel Core processors on the LGA 1151 (300 Series) socket; older LGA 1151 CPUs are not compatible.

What DDR4 speeds can I run on the four memory slots?

The board lists DDR4 4300+(OC), 4133(OC), 4000(OC), 3866(OC), 3800(OC), 3733(OC), 3600(OC), 3200(OC), 2933(OC), 2800(OC), 2666, 2400 and 2133, up to 128 GB total in dual-channel mode.

How many M.2 drives and SATA drives can I install simultaneously?

Two Ultra M.2 sockets (Key M, 2230–2280) and six SATA3 6.0 Gb/s ports; using a SATA-type M.2 in the first slot disables SATA3_5, and using one in the second slot disables SATA3_1.
