Creator AM4 platform

The ASUS ProArt B550-CREATOR is an ATX motherboard built for content creators who need an AMD AM4 socket with PCIe 4.0 support. It accepts Ryzen 5000 Series, 4000 G-Series and 3000 Series processors and provides four DDR4 slots for up to 128 GB of dual-channel memory. Dual Thunderbolt 4 Type-C ports and dual Intel 2.5Gb Ethernet give the I/O bandwidth creative workflows demand.

PCIe 4.0 and Thunderbolt limits

The primary x16 slot and the first M.2 socket run at PCIe 4.0 x4 when a Ryzen 5000 or 3000 Series CPU is installed; with a 4000 G-Series chip they drop to PCIe 3.0 speeds. The second x16 slot is wired for PCIe 3.0 x4 and shares bandwidth with the Thunderbolt 4 controller, so populating that slot disables Thunderbolt video output. Two PCIe 3.0 x1 slots also share lanes with the second M.2 socket.

CPU, memory and M.2 checks

Verify that your chosen processor appears on the ASUS CPU support list because feature availability changes by series. Confirm your DDR4 kit matches a validated speed from the supported range up to 5100(OC) and that ECC requirements align with the specific CPU. Check which M.2 form factors (2242, 2260, 2280, 22110) your drives use and whether you need SATA or PCIe mode on each slot.

Questions about this item

Should I choose a Ryzen 5000 Series or 4000 G-Series CPU for this AM4 board?

Both families fit the AM4 socket; 5000 Series enables PCIe 4.0 on the primary M.2 and graphics slots while 4000 G-Series limits M.2_1 to PCIe 3.0 and adds integrated graphics.

What does PCIe 4.0 on the B550 chipset actually deliver for my GPU and storage?

With a Ryzen 5000 CPU the top x16 slot and M.2_1 run at PCIe 4.0 x4 speeds; a 4000 G-Series CPU drops both to PCIe 3.0.

How do the dual Thunderbolt 4 Type-C ports share bandwidth with the third PCIe x16 slot?

The third x16 slot is wired as PCIe 3.0 x4; if you populate it the Thunderbolt 4 controller loses its PCIe link and the ports become USB-only.
