Ultra-Slim Portable DVD Writer

The ASUS ZenDrive U9M is an external optical drive measuring 13 mm thin. It connects through USB 2.0 and includes both USB Type-A and Type-C cables for broad system compatibility. The tray-load unit reads and writes CD and DVD media and supports M-DISC for archival storage. It draws power directly from the USB port so no external adapter is required.

Sustained Write Behaviour

Maximum write speeds reach 8X for DVD+R and DVD-R and 24X for CD-R. DVD+RW and DVD-RW rewrite at 8X and 6X respectively while dual-layer media records at 6X. Read access times are 160 ms for DVD and 140 ms for CD. The USB 2.0 interface caps sustained throughput below peak optical rates during long sessions.

Build Quality and Daily Use

The chassis uses a concentric-circle hairline finish in black with dimensions of 0.55" x 5.30" x 5.60". Its slim profile fits alongside ultra-thin laptops and desktop setups alike. The tray mechanism loads discs smoothly and the included dual cables let you switch between legacy and modern ports without carrying adapters.

Questions about this item

How much heat or noise does the 13 mm drive produce during long burning sessions?

The USB 2.0 interface limits power draw so the unit stays cool and quiet even during extended 8× DVD or 24× CD writes.

Which cables or ports must I already have to use the ZenDrive U9M?

A free USB Type-A or USB Type-C port is required; both matching cables are included in the box.

Will the drive work reliably with a Windows 7 laptop that I still keep?

Yes, Windows 7 is listed among the supported operating systems alongside Vista, XP, 8, 8.1, 10 and Mac OS X 10.6 or higher.
