Professional Studio Monitoring Headphones

The Audio-Technica ATH-M40x is a closed-back monitor headphone built for studio engineers, DJs, and critical listeners who require accurate sound reproduction. Its 40mm dynamic drivers with neodymium magnets and copper-clad aluminum voice coils deliver a flat frequency response from 15 Hz to 24 kHz. The over-ear design provides effective sound isolation for focused work in noisy environments. A foldable frame and included carrying pouch make it practical for mobile professionals.

Frequency Response and Driver Headroom

The 40mm drivers cover a wide 15 Hz to 24 kHz range, capturing deep sub-bass and extended high-frequency detail essential for mixing decisions. This headroom ensures precise monitoring across the full audible spectrum without coloration. The closed-back enclosure reinforces low-end presence while blocking external sound, though open-back alternatives may offer a wider perceived soundstage for mastering. The impedance suits professional interfaces and portable devices alike.

Upgrade Path and Bundle Value

This package replaces entry-level consumer headphones that lack a flat response or durable construction for daily studio use. The jump is worth it when mixing accuracy, cable replaceability, and one-ear monitoring via 90° swiveling earcups become necessities. Two detachable cables — a coiled 3.9 to 9.8-foot and a straight 9.8-foot — with gold-plated 3.5 mm plugs and a 1/4" adapter cover studio and mobile setups. A headphone stand and cleaning cloth complete the kit.

Questions about this item

Will the 3.5 mm plugs work with my older 1/4" studio mixer?

Yes, each detachable cable includes a 1/4" adapter so the 3.5 mm plug connects directly to professional mixers and audio interfaces.

How can I verify the 40 mm drivers are reproducing the full 15 Hz to 24 kHz range accurately?

Play a calibrated frequency sweep; the closed-back design and flat response should reveal every tone without obvious peaks or roll-off at the extremes.

Does the bundle include both the coiled 3.9 to 9.8-foot cable and the straight 9.8-foot cable, or must I buy one separately?

Both cables are supplied in the box along with a carrying pouch, cleaning cloth and headphone stand — no extra purchase needed.
