Console-ready portable storage

The Avolusion Z1-S is a 500GB USB 3.0 external drive pre-formatted for PlayStation 4 and also works with PS5. Its bus-powered design means no extra power adapter is needed, making it a simple plug-and-play upgrade for gamers who want more space without opening their console.

SuperSpeed USB 3.0 interface

The single spec that decides compatibility is the SuperSpeed USB 3.0 connection rated at 5.0 gbps. The drive must plug into a USB 3.0 port on the console or PC to deliver that throughput; older USB 2.0 ports will work but run far slower and may not provide enough power for reliable operation.

Tool-free setup with one common pitfall

Installation is literally plugging the cable into the front or rear USB port — no case opening, no drivers and no formatting required because the drive ships ready for PlayStation. The usual mistake is connecting it through a non-powered hub or a USB 2.0 port, which starves the drive of current and causes disconnects or unrecognised device errors.

Questions about this item

How much of the 500GB capacity will I actually see after the PS4 pre-format?

The drive ships pre-formatted for PS4 so the console recognises the full 500GB immediately; a small portion is reserved for the file system but no further setup is required.

What does the USB 3.0 interface limit the 5.0 gbps transfer rate to in real use?

USB 3.0 caps the theoretical ceiling at 5.0 gbps; actual throughput depends on the console or PC port, cable quality and file sizes but cannot exceed that limit.

Will the 2.5 inch aluminium chassis fit inside my PS4 Slim without an external power brick?

The slim 2.5 inch aluminium enclosure is bus-powered over USB 3.0, so it draws all the power it needs from the console port and requires no separate adapter.
