VHF Radio with 128 Channels

The DSR-590 is a portable VHF two-way radio covering the 136-174MHz frequency band. It provides 128 programmable channels and includes an antenna, battery, and charging station. This unit suits marine or outdoor users needing reliable voice communication on the water or in remote areas.

Frequency Range and Power Limits

The radio operates on VHF from 136MHz to 174MHz with an output power of 5 watts. Supplier data also lists a UHF range of 450-520MHz, though the primary band is VHF. The talk range reaches up to 2 miles in typical conditions, extending to 3 miles in optimal line-of-sight scenarios. Adjacent channel selectivity is rated at -65 dB.

Capacity and Headroom

A 1400mAh 7.4V Li-ion battery powers the unit for extended shifts. Audio output stays below 0.5 watts with distortion under 7 percent. The all-metal chassis withstands rough handling. Users needing longer range, higher audio power, or non-VHF bands should consider other equipment.

Questions about this item

Should I pick the VHF 136-174 MHz version or the UHF 450-520 MHz version?

The DSR-590 operates on VHF 136-174 MHz. The UHF 450-520 MHz range appears in the spec sheet but does not apply to this VHF model.

What does the 5-watt output actually deliver in the field?

5 watts gives a practical talk range of up to 2 miles in typical terrain, with a maximum of 3 miles in open conditions.

How does the Kenwood 2-pin audio connector limit headset choices?

The 2-pin Kenwood jack accepts standard Kenwood-compatible earpieces, speaker mics and headsets; other pinouts will not fit without an adapter.
