What it is and who it is for

The Beyerdynamic M-1 is a super-cardioid shotgun condenser microphone weighing 92 grams. It connects to DSLR cameras using a standard 3.5mm TRS plug and mounts on a universal hot shoe. Designed for close-range interviews, vlogs and live streaming within three metres.

Practical limits of the 3.5mm TRS interface

The microphone works only with cameras that have a 3.5mm TRS jack. It is incompatible with XLR, USB, mobile phones, tablets, computers and specific models such as Canon Rebel T5, T6, T7, R50 and Nikon D350. Effective pickup range is zero to five metres, with best results under three metres. Not suited to noisy or long-distance environments like concerts.

Build quality and daily mounting

The body measures 5.4 by 1.1 by 2.4 inches and includes a windproof cover that reduces wind noise and ambient sound. A standard hot shoe allows quick attachment to most DSLR cameras. Frequency response spans 50 Hz to 16 kHz with sensitivity of -45 dB and self-noise of 24 dB A. Maximum SPL is 130 dB at 1.5% THD. Output impedance is 200 ohms. Powered by a single AAA alkaline battery.
