A USB microphone has its own converter and plugs into a Type-A or Type-C port, so it is the simplest route for streaming and calls. XLR and 6.35 mm microphones are analogue and need an audio interface or mixer, which costs extra but lets you upgrade each part separately. 3.5 mm models plug into a headset-style jack: laptops and phones with a single combined jack need a four-contact TRRS plug, while desktops with separate microphone sockets use three-contact TRS.
Pickup pattern decides what the mic hears. A cardioid pattern favours sound in front and rejects the rear, which cuts keyboard and room noise for one speaker; omnidirectional patterns hear everything, which suits a group around a table. Signal-to-noise ratio, in decibels, shows hiss: higher is quieter, and figures in the 70s and 80s are good. Frequency response of 20 Hz to 20 kHz covers the audible range, and sample rate and bit depth, such as 24-bit at 192 kHz, only matter if your software uses them. Foam covers and pop filters tame breath noise.
