USB to RS-232 serial adapter
This BFKK cable converts a USB Type-A port into a male DB9 RS-232 connector for legacy serial devices. It targets technicians and hobbyists who need to configure modems, barcode scanners, label writers or industrial equipment through a modern computer.
Practical limits of the USB-RS232 bridge
The Prolific PL-2303 chipset delivers a maximum data rate of 1 Mbps over the 1.8 m cable. Triple-shielded 24/28 AWG tinned copper conductors protect signal integrity, but the link remains bound by standard RS-232 voltage levels and distance constraints. No video or audio transmission is possible; the DB9 connector is not a VGA interface.
Driver installation and common issues
Windows 11 through 98, macOS 10.6 and later, and Linux kernel 2.4.0 onward are supported after a one-time driver install. The adapter draws power from the USB port so no external supply is needed. Failures usually stem from missing or mismatched PL-2303 drivers, incorrect COM-port settings in terminal software, or loose thumbscrews on the DB9 shell.

Questions about this item
Is the 1.8 m cable the only length offered?
The adapter ships as a single 1.8 metre USB Type-A to DB9 assembly with tinned-copper conductors and triple shielding.
What does the 1 Mbps transfer rate mean for a barcode scanner or label printer?
The PL-2303 chipset delivers up to 1 Mbps, which is ample for typical RS-232 peripherals such as barcode scanners, label writers and serial modems.
Does the DB9 connector follow the RS-232 pinout and voltage levels?
Yes, the male 9-pin DB9 connector uses the standard RS-232 pinout and signalling levels for direct connection to serial equipment.
