Adds wired Gigabit Ethernet to USB-C laptops with PXE boot and MAC cloning support
The Cable Matters 201213-GRY adds a wired 1000 Mbps network port to laptops that only have a USB-C connector. It works with MacBook Pro, Dell XPS, Surface Pro and similar ultra-thin devices. The adapter supports USB 3.1 data rates up to 5 Gbps and falls back to 10/100 Mbps networks when required.
Native drivers in Chrome, Mac and Windows enable driver-free installation. The adapter supports Wake-on-LAN, full-duplex and half-duplex modes, crossover detection, backpressure routing and Auto-MDIX. Preboot Execution Environment (PXE) allows network booting, while the Cable Matters EZ-Dock utility on Windows provides MAC address pass-through and cloning.
The adapter weighs 25.515 grams and connects directly to USB-C or Thunderbolt 3 ports on Dell XPS 12, 13, 15, Latitude, Precision and Alienware 13, 15, 17 models. It provides a single RJ45 port with no Power Delivery or additional USB ports. Buyers who need charging passthrough or multiple Ethernet connections should choose a hub or docking station instead.

The adapter weighs 25.515 grams and uses a standard USB-C plug and RJ45 jack rated for typical insertion cycles; no moving parts require replacement.
The USB 3.1 Gen 1 interface caps at 5 Gbps, so the 1000 Mbps Ethernet port is the bottleneck under continuous load.
It draws power from the host USB-C port, has no fan, and the lightweight aluminium casing dissipates heat passively during extended operation.
