Adapter, converter, splitter or switch?

These words are used loosely, but they solve different problems. A passive adapter only changes the plug shape, such as USB-A to USB-C or a gender changer from female to male. A converter changes the signal itself, so it contains a chip and often needs power, for jobs like DisplayPort to VGA. A splitter copies one source to several outputs, while a switch picks one source from several. Choose by the outcome you want, and check direction, because many converters work one way only.

Resolution and refresh rate are the next limit. An adapter that handles 4K at 30 Hz will not give 4K at 60 Hz, and the standard needed, such as HDMI 2.0 or DisplayPort 1.2, must exist on every part of the chain. To add ports to a laptop, look at USB-C Multiport Adapters; to show one screen on several, see HDMI & Video Splitters.

Standards an adapter must match for drives, networks and power

Storage adapters must match the drive. SATA, IDE and M.2 are different connectors, and M.2 drives come in SATA and NVMe forms that one adapter may not both support. Network adapters should state their speed, such as Gigabit or 2.5 Gigabit, and need a matching port and cable to reach it. A plug adapter changes the pins to fit a foreign socket but does not convert voltage. Barrel power connectors need the right outer and inner diameter and the same polarity as the original supply.

Questions about Adapters, Converters and Splitters

Which adapter do I need to connect my laptop to a TV?
Look at the video port on the laptop and the input on the TV. HDMI to HDMI needs only a cable. A USB-C laptop needs a USB-C to HDMI adapter and a port that supports video output. An older VGA-only laptop needs a VGA to HDMI converter, with separate audio.
Does an adapter change the speed of my connection?
An adapter cannot make a connection faster than its slowest part. A USB 3.0 Ethernet adapter in a USB 2.0 port, or a 4K adapter on an older cable, runs at the lower limit. Read the speed or resolution the adapter lists, and check that your ports and cables support it too.
Do adapters reduce picture or sound quality?
Passive adapters that only change the plug shape do not alter quality, but every extra connector is another place for the signal to weaken. Converters that scale or digitize a picture can soften it slightly. Use the shortest path and avoid long chains of adapters.
