A compact normal prime with a bright f/1.8 aperture for low-light shooting and shallow depth of field, plus near-silent STM autofocus for video and stills
The Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 STM is a compact normal-length prime designed for full-frame EF-mount DSLRs and also usable on APS-C bodies where it provides an 80mm equivalent focal length. It suits photographers who want a bright, lightweight lens for everyday shooting, portraits, action and low-light scenes. The bright f/1.8 maximum aperture enables shallow depth of field and low-light capability. It is not for buyers who need zoom flexibility or wider focal lengths.
As a passive optical lens without electronic cooling or motorised zoom, it generates no operational heat and draws negligible power from the camera body. The STM stepping motor operates near-silently during autofocus, making it suitable for video recording where microphone pickup is a concern. There are no fans, pumps or active thermal components to create noise.
The f/1.8 maximum aperture is the single specification that determines whether this lens meets the need for shallow depth of field and low-light performance. It provides significant light-gathering advantage over slower kit zooms and enables subject isolation for portraits. If the shooting scenario demands a wider maximum aperture such as f/1.4 or f/1.2, this model will not satisfy that requirement.

Align the red dot on the lens barrel with the red dot on the EF mount, twist clockwise until it clicks, then set the focus mode switch to AF so the STM motor can drive focus; forgetting the switch leaves the lens in manual focus only.
The STM stepping motor and the electronic focus-by-wire system are the only moving parts subject to wear; the six-element optical group with Super Spectra coating and the fixed f/1.8 aperture have no serviceable components.
Maximum magnification is 0.21x, reached at the minimum focusing distance of 0.35 m; beyond that point the lens cannot focus any closer regardless of the STM motor's travel.
