Measures up to 1000 °C with a 30:1 distance-to-spot ratio and laser targeting for precise non-contact readings
The CEM DT-8838 is a non-contact infrared thermometer designed for electricians and technicians who need fast surface-temperature readings. It measures up to 1000°C or 1832°F with a 30:1 distance-to-spot ratio, allowing smaller targets to be measured from further away. Adjustable emissivity and laser targeting help adapt the tool to different materials and working conditions.
A 30:1 distance-to-spot ratio means the measurement area grows wider as distance increases, so very small components cannot be accurately measured from far away. The 150 ms sampling time suits quick checks but may miss rapid thermal transients. Accuracy is stated as 1% for the series, and the fixed upper limit of 1000°C rules out higher-temperature processes such as metal casting or ceramics.
The red housing measures 220 mm by 120 mm by 56 mm and fits a standard tool bag or belt pouch. A white backlit LCD shows max, min, differential and average values, while trigger lock enables continuous monitoring without holding the button. High and low alarms give audible warnings, and auto power-off preserves battery life; batteries are not included in the package.

The DT-8838 has a 30:1 distance-to-spot ratio, so you must be closer to small targets than with the 50:1 versions. Pick it when typical working distances are shorter and the 1000 °C range covers your application.
It is the maximum temperature the DT-8838 can display. Above 1000 °C the meter shows an over-range indication, so it suits tasks up to that limit such as electrical panels, motors or HVAC components.
At 30:1 the measured spot diameter equals the distance divided by 30. For example, at 300 mm the spot is roughly 10 mm, so you must get close enough that the target fully covers that circle.
