Pick the power source before the tool

Start with how the tool is powered, because that choice shapes every other decision. Corded electric tools give steady output with no runtime limit but need an outlet within reach. Cordless tools add freedom, but a bare tool is useless without a battery and charger from the same platform, and packs rarely fit across makers. Air tools are light and durable but depend on a compressor that supplies their rated airflow. For battery work see Cordless Drills & Screwdrivers, and for air-driven tools see Air & Hydraulic Power Tools.

Bare tool or complete kit?

Listings range from single tools to multi-piece sets, so read the item count and contents before comparing anything. A bit set or kit covers its accessories, a bare tool does not, and a compressor may need hose, fittings or a regulator supplied separately. Check the rated voltage of corded tools against your supply, and the chuck or shank size against the bits you already own. Test gear and electrical hand tools also appear here, and they follow different rules: match the measuring range or voltage class to the circuits you work on.

Questions about Power Tools and Air Equipment

Do cordless power tools include a battery?
Not always. Many are listed as bare tools, and the listing says whether batteries are included. Check for a battery and charger, and match both to the battery platform of any tools you already own, because packs generally do not fit across brands.
What does CFM mean for an air tool?
CFM is cubic feet per minute of air. Each air tool lists the airflow it needs at a working pressure, often 90 PSI. Your compressor should deliver more than that figure continuously, otherwise the tool slows down and stalls under load.
Can a small tire inflator run air tools?
Only the lightest jobs. Small inflators move little air, so tools used in short bursts, such as a brad nailer, can work, while sanders and grinders that run continuously need a compressor with a tank and a much higher airflow rating.
