Chicago-Latrobe 53159 Taper Shank Drill

The Chicago-Latrobe 53159 is a taper shank drill bit made from high speed steel with a black oxide finish. It is designed for machinists and maintenance technicians who need a 59/64 inch cutting diameter and a number 3 Morse taper shank for direct fit into compatible machine spindles.

Practical limits of the 118 degree conventional

The 118 degree conventional point works well for general purpose drilling in steel and cast iron but is not suited for hard materials or high precision hole finishing. Users requiring split point geometry, cobalt alloy substrates or specialised coatings for stainless steel or exotic alloys should select a different drill bit.

Questions about this item

Should I choose the 59/64 in size or a different capacity for my #3MT holder?

The drill is a single 59/64 in size designed for a #3 Morse taper shank; there are no alternative capacities for this model.

What does the 118 degree point angle mean when I use this bit in a machine?

The 118 degree conventional point is a general-purpose geometry that centres well in steel and cast iron on a standard drill press or lathe.
