Carbide-tipped jobber drill with 118-degree point drills 3/16 in holes in tough materials
The Chicago-Latrobe 77649 is a jobber-length drill bit sized at 3/16 in with a conventional 118-degree point. It is built for general-purpose drilling in metal, wood and plastic where a standard helix and bright finish are preferred. The carbide tip gives longer edge life than high-speed steel in abrasive materials. Machinists and maintenance technicians who need a single fractional size for repeated holes will find it straightforward to use.
Carbide tipping resists wear when cutting cast iron, fibreglass or hardened steel, reducing the frequency of bit changes. The bright, uncoated surface runs cool in shallow holes and allows easy resharpening on a bench grinder. Because the bit is non-coolant-through with zero coolant holes, chips clear through the flutes alone, so peck drilling is advisable in deeper cuts. The straight shank fits standard three-jaw chucks and quick-change adapters without extra sleeves.
The bit ships as a single unit in its factory packaging, so no organiser case or index is included. Users can add it directly to an existing jobber set or drill-bit drawer without duplicating sizes they already own. There is no software, driver or licence to manage; the tool is purely mechanical. Buyers who need a full fractional set or a coated variant for high-volume production should look elsewhere.

The 77649 has a standard straight shank that matches its 3/16 in diameter, so it fits any three-jaw chuck or collet sized for that diameter.
The flute length follows standard jobber proportions for a 3/16 in bit, so allow at least that depth plus chip clearance when drilling blind holes.
Use a centre punch mark, then apply light pressure at low RPM until the 118-degree point engages before increasing speed.
