Cisco 866VAE ADSL2+ VDSL2 wireless router

The Cisco 866VAE is a wireless integrated services router that supports ADSL2+ and VDSL2 broadband connections. It provides Gigabit Ethernet LAN connectivity and includes a USB port for additional peripherals. This desktop or rack-mountable unit suits small offices needing a single-box WAN and wireless solution.

Build integration: five RJ-45 ports and USB

Five Gigabit Ethernet RJ-45 ports connect wired clients directly without an extra switch. The USB port allows a storage or modem dongle to be attached, freeing a separate host device. No PoE ports are present, so access points or phones need their own power injectors. The compact 1.8-inch height fits shallow cabinets or shelf spaces.

Capacity and headroom: dual-mode xDSL and wired LAN

The router handles ADSL2+ and VDSL2 line rates, delivering adequate throughput for typical branch internet plans. Gigabit LAN ports ensure local traffic is not bottlenecked by the WAN link. Heavy simultaneous VPN or advanced security services may exceed the integrated processor headroom. Buyers needing higher session counts or multi-gigabit WAN should consider a larger platform.

Questions about this item

How many Gigabit Ethernet LAN ports does the Cisco 866VAE provide for wired devices?

The router includes five RJ-45 ports that all run at Gigabit Ethernet speed for local wired connections.

Does the Cisco 866VAE have a fan, and how much noise or heat should I expect during continuous operation?

The spec sheet lists no fan or acoustic rating, so the unit relies on passive cooling and runs silently under normal load.

Which WAN connection types are supported out of the box on the Cisco 866VAE?

It terminates both ADSL2+ and VDSL2 lines directly, so no separate modem is required for either service.
