Cisco 888EA-K9 4-port desktop router

The Cisco 888EA-K9 is a desktop router from the 880 series that integrates routing, firewall, VPN and VoIP functions for small offices and teleworkers. It provides four Fast Ethernet LAN ports and one WAN interface supporting SHDSL broadband. The unit ships new and is managed through Cisco IOS for centralized configuration.

Replaces separate router, firewall and VoIP boxes

Consolidating these roles into one appliance reduces rack space, cabling and management overhead for sites that need secure broadband with voice services. The upgrade is worthwhile when a single device can handle the 10/100Mbps throughput required by the branch and when SHDSL is the available carrier service.

Limited by Fast Ethernet and SHDSL WAN

The four LAN ports operate at 10/100Mbps, so throughput above 100Mbps cannot be achieved on the local network. The SHDSL WAN interface bounds broadband speed to the carrier's symmetric DSL rate, making the appliance unsuitable for fibre or cable connections that exceed this interface.
