Throughput with security features switched on

The big number on a datasheet is usually firewall throughput on plain traffic. Turn on intrusion prevention, antivirus or inspection of encrypted traffic and the figure can drop a lot, so size the appliance against the throughput quoted with the features you will actually use. Then match the ports: 2.5 Gigabit Ethernet and 10 Gigabit SFP+ uplinks matter if your internet link or core switch is faster than gigabit. Several WAN ports allow failover or load balancing between two providers, and session and client limits show how many devices the box can track.

Form factor, VPN type and the subscription behind it

Desktop units suit a small office, 1U rack models fit a patch rack, and some mount on a wall. VPN needs differ: a site-to-site tunnel links two networks, while remote-access VPN lets staff connect from outside, using IPsec, SSL or WireGuard depending on the product. Check the tunnel count and the VPN throughput, which is lower than routing speed. Many branded appliances also need an active subscription for threat feeds, filtering and firmware updates, so look at what the hardware does without it. An old fixed-port 10/100 model suits only a very light connection.

Questions about Firewall Appliances and VPN Gateways

Is a firewall appliance better than my router's built-in firewall?
A router's firewall blocks unsolicited inbound traffic, which is enough for many homes. Appliances add intrusion prevention, VLAN separation, multi-WAN, detailed logging, user-based rules and proper VPN termination, which matter for an office with servers, guest networks or compliance needs.
What is the difference between site-to-site and remote-access VPN?
Site-to-site VPN joins two networks permanently, such as head office and branch, using gateways at both ends. Remote-access VPN lets an individual laptop or phone connect into the network using client software. Most appliances support both, but tunnel and user limits differ.
Do I need a subscription for the security features?
On many models, yes. Basic routing, NAT and firewall rules work out of the box, but intrusion prevention, content filtering and signature updates are licensed per term. Check what is included, and note that licenses are specific to the appliance model.
