32GB DDR3 ECC Registered kit for Dell PowerEdge R520

This 32GB kit contains four 8GB DDR3 1333MHz ECC Registered DIMMs built for the Dell PowerEdge R520 server. Each module runs at 1.5V with CL9 timing and a 2Rx4 organisation. The registered design adds a buffer that reduces electrical load on the memory controller, which is required for the large-capacity configurations this platform supports.

Replacing unbuffered ECC

The R520 accepts either Registered ECC or Unbuffered ECC memory, but the two types cannot be mixed in the same system. If the server currently uses Unbuffered ECC DIMMs, every slot must be repopulated with Registered modules like these to enable the full 384GB Registered ceiling. The upgrade is worth it when the workload needs more than the 48GB Unbuffered limit or when all twelve sockets must be filled.

Straightforward installation with one critical rule

Installation follows standard 240-pin DIMM procedure: power down, open the chassis, align the notch and press until the latches click. The only common error is mixing Registered and Unbuffered ECC within the same memory bank, which the firmware will reject. Use identical 2Rx4 modules in each bank and populate sockets per the R520’s six-sockets-per-processor layout for correct operation.

Questions about this item

How many 240-pin DIMM slots does the Dell PowerEdge R520 provide for this registered ECC kit?

The R520 has 12 DIMM sockets total, six per processor, so the four 8 GB modules in this kit will occupy four of those registered ECC slots.

What is the correct population rule when installing these 2Rx4 registered DIMMs in the R520?

Install identical 2Rx4 modules within each memory bank; do not mix registered and unbuffered ECC, and do not combine x4 and x8 4 GB parts in the same bank.

Will these modules require any active cooling or heat-spreader maintenance over time?

No heat spreader is fitted and the modules run at standard 1.5 V, so only occasional dust removal from the server’s airflow path is needed.
