The board accepts up to 96 GB with Registered DIMMs across six total sockets, but memory speed drops as sockets fill. One DIMM per channel runs at 1333 MHz with Xeon X5550 or higher; two per channel forces 800 MHz. Quad-rank modules cannot reach 1333 MHz on this platform, and the system will not accept more than two such DIMMs per channel.

Registered build and slot implications

Modules use a 240-pin Registered 2Rx4 layout without heat spreaders, fitting the server’s standard DIMM slots. Mixing Registered and Unbuffered ECC is not supported, so all populated sockets must use the same type. The kit is validated only for the named Asus Z8 boards; other systems, including desktop platforms, are not compatible.
