Adds two eSATA II ports to a laptop through a single 34 mm ExpressCard slot, each delivering up to 300 MB/sec throughput with Port Multiplier support and software RAID
The CoolGear T-EC2R adds two eSATA ports to a notebook through a single ExpressCard 34mm slot. It targets users who need faster external storage connections than USB 2.0 provides. The card uses a Silicon Image SiI3132 controller and supports software RAID under Windows. It is suited for mobile workstations that still have an ExpressCard interface.
The card follows the PC Card 32-bit CardBus standard and fits a 34mm ExpressCard slot. Each eSATA connector allows cables up to two metres for flexible placement. Port Multiplier support lets each port address up to five drives in compatible enclosures. FIS-based switching manages multiple drives without blocking the bus.
The adapter replaces a single USB 2.0 link with two independent SATA II channels running at 300 MB/sec each. Drives of 137 GB or larger can be used in one partition without legacy size limits. The jump is worthwhile when the notebook has an ExpressCard slot and the workflow moves large files to external arrays. Systems without ExpressCard or already using faster interfaces will not benefit.
