Webcam for Legacy Windows PCs

The Corn Electronics DZ-SXT-004 is a USB 2.0 webcam designed for video calling on older Windows systems. It supports Windows XP, Vista and 7 in both 32-bit and 64-bit versions. The 143 cm cable provides flexible placement on a desk or monitor.

USB 2.0 Bandwidth Limits Capture Quality

The USB 2.0 interface caps the video stream at 640 x 480 pixels at 30 frames per second. Effective resolution is 0.3 megapixels, with a software-enhanced 1.3 megapixel mode available for still images. Higher resolutions or frame rates are not supported by this connection.

0.3 Megapixel Sensor Decides Suitability

The 0.3 megapixel CMOS sensor produces a basic VGA picture adequate for simple chats on supported legacy systems. Buyers who need HD video or modern operating system support should choose a different camera. The fixed focus and built-in microphone complete the basic feature set.

Questions about this item

Is the 1.3 MP software-enhanced resolution the same as the 640 x 480 video capture?

No, the 1.3 MP figure is a software-enhanced still-image value, while the actual video capture is fixed at 640 x 480 pixels at 30 frames per second.

Will I see 30 fps in a typical video call on Windows 7?

Yes, the camera delivers up to 30 frames per second at 640 x 480, so a standard call on Windows 7 x32 or x64 will run at that rate provided the application and lighting allow it.

What does the USB 2.0 interface limit for this webcam?

USB 2.0 caps the video stream at 640 x 480 at 30 fps and carries both video and the built-in noise-cancelling microphone audio over the single 143 cm cable.
