What it is and who it's for

The CRAFTSMAN CMHT77638 is a laser distance meter with a 65-foot measuring range designed for quick indoor layout tasks. It calculates distance, area and volume automatically from a simple two-button interface. A Class 2 laser operating between 620 and 690 nm provides accuracy within one-eighth inch at 30 feet. The IP54-rated plastic housing resists dust and splashes on job sites.

Thermals, noise and power in normal use

The device runs on an internal lithium-ion cell charged via the included USB cable, eliminating disposable batteries. With no moving parts it operates silently and generates negligible heat during typical measuring sessions. The lightweight 0.01-ounce body and compact 7.2 by 4.5 by 1.7 inch form factor stay cool in hand during repeated point-and-click use.

Behaviour under sustained load

Continuous measurement mode lets the user track a target in real time without pausing for single readings. The laser remains active while the button is held, delivering a steady stream of distance data for layout work. Battery life supports extended sessions, and the IP54 seal maintains protection during prolonged outdoor exposure to dust and light rain.

Questions about this item

How do I charge the lithium-ion battery and what is the common mistake?

Connect the included USB cable to the charging port; the common mistake is using a high-power charger instead of a standard 5 V USB source.

Will the laser lens or water-resistant seals need replacement over time?

The IP54-rated housing and laser window are sealed; wipe the lens with a soft cloth and avoid submerging the unit to maintain protection.

At what distance does the ±1/8-inch accuracy spec no longer apply during extended measuring?

The stated ±1/8-inch accuracy is specified at 30 feet; beyond that range the tolerance widens, so verify critical long-distance readings manually.
