Right or left, regular or stiff: specs shared by every club

Every club listing carries the same core specs. Hand orientation is right or left, and a right-handed golfer uses right-hand clubs. Flex describes how much the shaft bends: ladies and senior flexes suit slower swings, regular suits average speeds, and stiff and extra stiff suit fast swings. Shafts are graphite, which is lighter, or steel, which is heavier and often steadier, and some sets mix the two.

Loft is the angle of the clubface. Lower loft sends the ball lower and farther, so a driver has far less loft than a sand wedge. Lengths run from over 45 inches for a driver down to about 35 for a wedge. The rules allow at most 14 clubs in the bag, which is why sets list exactly which clubs they include.

Building the bag: sets first, then single clubs and extras

A newcomer is best served by a boxed set that covers driver, fairway wood or hybrid, irons, a wedge and a putter; Complete Golf Sets collects them. Experienced players swap clubs one at a time to close gaps in distance, aiming for three to four degrees of loft between neighbors. A gap of more than one club in distance is a sign that a club is missing.

Balls, bags and shoes are separate choices. Ball construction changes feel and spin, and Golf Balls for Play & Practice separates course balls from foam and plastic ones. Bags are chosen by how you move around the course, and shoes by grip and comfort. Rangefinders and GPS units measure distance, and swing trainers are for practice at home.

Questions about Golf Clubs and Equipment: Hand, Flex and Shaft Basics

How do I know if I need left-hand clubs?
Left-hand clubs are for golfers who swing from the left side of the ball. Most right-handed people play right-hand clubs, but some left-handed people do too. Try a few swings with each, or ask a coach, before you commit to a full set.
How do I choose a shaft flex?
Choose by swing speed: ladies or senior flex for slower swings, regular for moderate speeds, and stiff or extra stiff for fast ones. If you are unsure, regular suits most recreational golfers, and a fitting session or launch monitor reading can confirm it.
How many clubs can I carry?
The rules of golf allow up to 14 clubs in the bag during a round. Most players carry a driver, one or two fairway woods or hybrids, irons, several wedges and a putter, and choose the mix to cover gaps in distance.
