1 TB magnetic portable SSD for iPhone Pro

The DATO ARES Q3 ARSQ3-1TB is a 1 TB portable SSD that attaches magnetically to iPhone 15, 16 and 17 Pro and Pro Max models using MagSafe. It provides direct 4K ProRes HDR recording without intermediate transfers. The drive also works with Windows, macOS, Linux, gaming consoles and other USB-C devices.

USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 interface limits real-world speed

The drive uses a USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 connection rated at 20 Gbps. Sequential reads reach up to 1600 MBps and writes up to 1500 MBps only when the host port supports the same standard. Older USB-C or USB-A ports will fall back to lower speeds and the supplied USB-C to A adapter is limited to 10 Gbps.

Magnetic mount requires MagSafe-compatible phone

Secure attachment depends on the MagSafe array built into iPhone 15 Pro, 16 Pro and 17 Pro Max models. Phones without MagSafe, cases that block the magnets or Android devices cannot use the magnetic feature and must rely on a cable connection instead.

Questions about this item

Which ARES Q3 capacity should I pick — 500GB, 1TB, 2TB or 4TB?

The 1TB model gives 1TB of cache and the quoted 1600 MB/s read, 1500 MB/s write; choose 500GB for lighter media, 2TB or 4TB if you need more space for 4K ProRes HDR projects.

What do the 1600 MB/s read and 1500 MB/s write figures mean when the drive is plugged into my laptop?

They are the maximum sequential speeds the controller can deliver over USB 3.2 Gen 2x2; real-world throughput will be lower if the host port, cable or thermal limits kick in.

What does USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 actually cap in everyday use?

The interface runs at 20Gbps, so the drive’s 1600/1500 MB/s peaks are the practical ceiling; any slower host port or cable will reduce the transfer rate accordingly.
