What this printer does

The Dell 1230C is a desktop colour laser printer built for photo output and everyday documents. It prints monochrome pages at 17 ppm and colour at 4 ppm with a maximum resolution of 2400 x 600 dpi. A 375 MHz processor and 32 MB of memory handle the job queue, while the 150-sheet tray covers both input and output. The monthly duty cycle reaches 20000 pages.

Connectivity and energy

A single USB port provides the only wired interface. The unit carries ENERGY STAR certification, confirming lower typical electricity consumption during active and idle states. No wireless, Ethernet or memory-card slots are present, so the printer must stay tethered to a host computer. The compact chassis measures 15.3" wide, 12.3" deep and 9.6" high.

Best fit and limits

Home users and small offices that need occasional colour prints and borderless photos on A4 or Letter media will find the speed and quality adequate. Buyers who require network sharing, automatic duplexing, larger paper capacities or faster colour throughput should consider other models. The fixed 32 MB memory and single USB link also rule out high-volume or multi-user environments.

Questions about this item

How often will the toner cartridges need replacing at the rated duty cycle?

The printer is rated for 20000 pages per month, so cartridge life will depend on actual print volume and coverage.

What limits continuous printing before the engine needs a cool-down?

The colour print speed is 4 ppm and mono is 17 ppm; sustained output at those rates will reach the 20000-page monthly duty ceiling first.

How much heat and noise does it produce when running all day?

It is ENERGY STAR certified and uses a 375 MHz processor with 32 MB memory, keeping power draw and fan noise low during extended use.
