Enterprise SAS HDD for PowerEdge Gen13

This Dell 1TZ279-150 is a 4TB 3.5-inch hard drive built for SAS 12G interfaces. It spins at 7200 RPM and carries the MPN ST4000NM0005. The drive is supplied new and intended for installation in compatible PowerEdge Gen13 servers.

Who should buy and who should not

IT teams refreshing or expanding storage arrays in Dell PowerEdge Gen13 platforms will find the correct form factor and interface here. Buyers needing a drive for desktop PCs, laptops, or non-SAS backplanes cannot use this unit. Systems requiring a different capacity, rotational speed, or interface protocol should look elsewhere.

The deciding specification

The SAS 12G interface and 3.5-inch LFF form factor determine whether this drive fits the target server bay and controller. Verify that the host system supports SAS 12G connectivity and accepts 3.5-inch drives before purchase.

Questions about this item

How much power and heat does the 7200 RPM 4TB SAS drive produce when running continuously?

The 7200 RPM spindle speed and 4TB capacity mean the drive will draw typical enterprise HDD power and generate corresponding heat under sustained workloads.

What controller or backplane must I already have for the SAS 12G interface to work?

A SAS 12Gb/s host bus adapter, RAID controller or server backplane with SAS ports is required to connect this 3.5in drive.

Will this 12G SAS drive work in my older PowerEdge Gen12 server that only supports 6G SAS?

The drive is listed as compatible with PowerEdge Gen13; it will negotiate down to 6G speeds on a Gen12 backplane but Gen13 is the validated platform.
