Dell 300GB 10K SAS Drive

The Dell 300GB 10000 RPM SAS drive fits a 2.5 inch bay and connects through a SAS 6Gb/s interface. It uses a 512n sector format and carries Dell part number 740Y7. The spindle speed supports transactional workloads in compatible servers or storage arrays.

Suits SAS storage bays only

This drive suits systems with native SAS backplanes or controllers that accept a 2.5 inch form factor. It is not for platforms that lack SAS connectivity or cannot power a 10000 RPM spindle. Buyers needing larger capacities should consider other models.

SAS 6Gb/s interface decides fit

The single specification that decides compatibility is the SAS 6Gb/s interface. The host must provide a SAS port and backplane power for a 2.5 inch drive. Without that interface the drive cannot be installed or recognised.

Questions about this item

Will this 2.5" 300 GB SAS drive fit the 2.5" bay in my server chassis?

Yes, the drive is built for a standard 2.5" bay and uses a SAS interface, so it mounts directly in any chassis that accepts 2.5" SAS devices.

Can this 10,000 rpm SAS drive share a backplane with slower SAS drives I already own?

The drive runs at 6 Gb/s SAS; a backplane that supports that speed will negotiate the link automatically with slower SAS drives on the same bus.

How do I confirm the 512 n sector format is active after installation?

Check the drive properties in your OS or RAID utility — it will report 512 bytes per sector if the 512 n format is operating correctly.
