6 TB SAS enterprise drive

The Dell 400-ALCJ is a 6 TB internal hard drive built for 13th-generation enterprise servers and storage arrays. It spins at 7200 RPM and connects through a 12 Gb/s SAS interface in a standard 3.5 inch form factor. The unit ships as a new kit with retail or OEM packaging.

Suited for capacity-focused arrays.

This drive fits administrators who need large sequential capacity for archival, backup or near-line workloads in compatible Dell chassis. It is not intended for operating-system boot volumes, transaction-heavy databases or applications that demand low-latency random performance. Buyers requiring faster random access should consider solid-state alternatives.

Steady throughput under continuous duty

At 7200 RPM the platters deliver consistent sequential bandwidth during long write or rebuild operations without the thermal throttling seen in desktop-class drives. The SAS dual-port interface maintains path redundancy so throughput persists even if one controller path fails. Sustained load behaviour is predictable for capacity-tier planning.

Questions about this item

Do I need a controller or backplane that supports 12 Gb/s SAS to use the 400-ALCJ?

Yes, the drive requires a SAS interface capable of 12 Gb/s signalling to operate at its rated speed.

Can the 400-ALCJ share a SAS backplane with 6 Gb/s SAS drives?

It is compatible with 12 Gb/s SAS infrastructure; mixing link speeds depends on the backplane and controller capabilities.

How can I verify the 400-ALCJ is running at 7200 RPM after installation?

Check the drive’s reported rotational speed in the RAID controller BIOS or operating-system disk utilities.
