DELL

DELL 7P79P 500GB 7200RPM SATA 2.5" internal hard drive

SKU CH-EKR6-VYP15

A 500 GB, 7200 RPM SATA hard drive with 32 MB cache in a 2.5 inch form factor for laptops

  • 500 GB capacity stores large media libraries
  • 7200 RPM spindle speed accelerates data access
  • 32 MB cache buffers frequent read requests
  • 6 Gb/s SATA interface enables fast host transfers
  • 7 mm z-height fits slim laptop bays

500 GB 7200 RPM SATA drive

This 2.5 inch SATA hard drive provides 500 GB of storage with a 7200 RPM spindle speed and a 32 MB cache. It is designed for laptop bays that accept a 7 mm z-height drive. The SATA 6 Gb/s interface connects directly to standard laptop controllers.

Sustained throughput on a mechanical spindle

Sequential read and write rates remain consistent during long transfers because the 7200 RPM platters maintain a constant rotational velocity. The 32 MB buffer absorbs burst traffic without slowing the media. Performance is limited by the physical rotation speed rather than a thermal throttle.

Thermals, acoustics and power in a laptop bay

The drive operates within typical laptop thermal envelopes and draws power from the SATA connector without an external supply. Acoustic output is limited to the spindle and seek noise inherent to a 7200 RPM mechanism. The 1.0 pound weight adds minimal mass to a portable chassis.

Questions about this item

How much noise and heat does this 7200RPM 2.5" SATA drive produce during continuous operation?

The 7200RPM spindle and 32MB cache generate typical mechanical-drive sound and warmth; a laptop cooling system designed for 2.5" SATA drives handles it without extra measures.

What does my laptop need to accept this 2.5" SATA 6Gb/s drive?

A 2.5" drive bay or caddy with a standard SATA data and power connector, plus a BIOS that recognises 500GB SATA storage.

Can this 500GB 7200RPM SATA drive share a laptop with an older mechanical drive?

Yes, if the chassis has a second 2.5" SATA bay or an M.2 SATA slot; both drives appear as separate volumes once the SATA controller detects them.
