Dell 8TB SAS 12Gb/s Enterprise Drive

This Dell 8TB 3.5-inch nearline SAS hard drive spins at 7.2K RPM and connects through a 12Gb/s interface. It uses 512e advanced format and ships in a genuine Dell F238F hot-plug tray with Dell firmware and serial number. The drive is built for hot-swap operation inside compatible Dell servers and storage arrays.

Suited for Enterprise SAS Bays Only

This drive fits servers and storage enclosures that accept 3.5-inch SAS hot-plug trays and run 12Gb/s SAS backplanes. It will not work in desktop PCs, laptops or consumer NAS units that only provide SATA ports or lack the required tray mechanism. Buyers needing SATA connectivity or a bare drive without a tray should look at a different model.

Check Backplane and Tray Compatibility First

Verify that your system supports 3.5-inch SAS hot-plug drives at 12Gb/s and uses the Dell F238F tray form factor. Confirm the controller firmware recognises 512e advanced-format drives and that an empty hot-plug bay is available. Without a matching SAS backplane and the correct tray the drive cannot be installed or detected.

Questions about this item

What server backplane or controller must I already have to accept a 12 Gb/s SAS 3.5-inch drive in a hot-swap tray?

The drive requires a SAS backplane or HBA that supports 12 Gb/s signalling and a 3.5-inch hot-swap bay; SATA-only controllers will not work.

Can the 7.2 K RPM SAS drive share the same 12 Gb/s backplane with older 6 Gb/s SAS or SATA drives?

Yes — the backplane will negotiate each link independently, so 6 Gb/s devices run at their rated speed while this drive runs at 12 Gb/s.

How do I verify the drive is recognised with genuine Dell firmware after installation?

Check the controller BIOS or OS utility for the Dell part number GKWHP and serial number; genuine Dell firmware will be reported alongside the 8 TB capacity.
