Dell 960GB SAS Enterprise SSD

This is a new Dell 960GB 2.5-inch enterprise solid-state drive with a SAS interface supporting 12 and 24Gbps speeds. It uses read-intensive TLC NAND and includes hardware-based SED encryption validated to FIPS standards. The drive is designed for Dell PowerEdge servers and carries part numbers KPM6WRUG960G and R9RTY.

Read-intensive workloads on compatible PowerEdge

The drive suits read-intensive workloads such as boot, web serving, content delivery and virtual desktop infrastructure on the listed PowerEdge models. It is not for write-heavy logging or caching tiers that need higher endurance, nor for systems that only accept interfaces other than SAS.

12/24Gbps SAS interface

The single specification that decides fit is the dual-speed SAS interface at 12 and 24Gbps; the server backplane and controller must support this protocol and speed for the drive to operate.

Questions about this item

What drive bay size and interface does this 2.5 SAS SSD need?

It fits a 2.5-inch bay and connects through a SAS backplane or controller.

What is the correct orientation when sliding this drive into a Dell PowerEdge tray?

Align the SAS connector with the backplane and push until the latch clicks; forcing it upside-down bends pins.

When should the 960GB TLC drive be replaced under heavy read workloads?

Monitor the SSD life remaining in iDRAC or OpenManage; replace when it approaches zero percent.
