Endurance ratings: DWPD, PBW and the workload

Endurance is the key number. DWPD, drive writes per day, says how many times the full capacity can be written daily over the rated life of the drive; PBW gives the same limit as total petabytes written. Around 1 DWPD suits read-heavy work such as web serving, 3 DWPD or more suits mixed databases and virtualisation, and write-intensive logging needs the top ratings. NAND type matters: TLC and eTLC suit mixed use, while QLC favours capacity for read-heavy jobs.

The mean time between failures figure, such as 2,000,000 hours, is a statistical reliability estimate across many drives, not a lifetime for a single drive. Enterprise drives often add power-loss protection and consistent latency under load, which matters in databases. Many branded server drives carry the system maker's firmware, so match the part number to your server model rather than choosing by capacity alone.

Interface and form factor must match the backplane

The server's drive bays decide the format. SATA III drives in 2.5-inch trays are the simplest and run at 6 Gb/s. SAS 12 Gb/s drives need a SAS controller and backplane. NVMe drives use PCIe lanes and come as U.2, a 2.5-inch body with a different connector from SATA, as E1.L or E1.S rulers in newer servers, or as M.2 2280 boot drives. Capacities of 960 GB, 1.92 TB and 3.84 TB are typical because part of the flash is held back as spare area.

Questions about Server and Data Center SSDs: Endurance and Interface

What does DWPD mean?
Drive writes per day: how many times you can write the drive's full capacity each day over its rated life. A 3.84 TB drive rated at 1 DWPD can take about 3.84 TB of writes daily. Higher figures suit write-heavy databases.
Can I use an enterprise SSD in a desktop?
SATA models can, because they use the standard 2.5-inch SATA connector. SAS, U.2 and E1.L drives need matching controllers, backplanes or adapters that desktops lack. Consumer SSDs are usually the better fit for a desktop.
Why do server SSDs have capacities like 3.84 TB?
Makers keep part of the flash as spare area for wear levelling and steady performance, so capacities such as 960 GB, 1.92 TB and 3.84 TB appear where consumer drives show 1 TB, 2 TB and 4 TB. More spare area improves endurance.
