Dell 9FD57 16X Sata DVD Writer

The Dell 9FD57 is a new internal optical drive that writes DVDs at 16X speed and handles CD read and write tasks. It connects through a standard Sata interface and fits a typical 5.25 inch bay in desktop computers. This unit suits users who still need to create or read physical discs for archives or software installation.

Sata bandwidth and media limits

The Sata connection provides enough bandwidth for the drive’s maximum 16X write rate without bottlenecking performance. Actual speeds depend on the quality of the blank media used and the capabilities of the burning software. The drive does not support Blu-ray formats, so buyers needing high-capacity optical storage should look elsewhere.

Questions about this item

Should I choose the 16X DVDRW CDRW combo drive or a different speed model?

The 16X rating is the maximum write speed for DVD media on this Sata internal drive. Select it if your burning software and blank discs support 16X; otherwise a lower-speed drive will still write at the highest speed both the drive and media allow.

What does the 16X figure mean once the drive is installed in a real machine?

It indicates the peak DVD write speed under optimal conditions. Actual throughput depends on the Sata host controller, disc quality, and whether the burning application uses constant-angular-velocity or constant-linear-velocity strategies.
