Dell EMC 12 TB SAS HDD

This Dell EMC internal hard drive delivers 12 TB of storage in a 3.5 inch form factor. It spins at 7200 RPM and connects via a 12 Gbps SAS interface. The unit is designed for nearline workloads and supports hot swap installation in compatible bays.

Enterprise storage expansion

The drive suits administrators adding high-capacity nearline storage to Dell EMC arrays or servers with 12 Gbps SAS backplanes. It is not for desktop PCs lacking SAS controllers or hot swap bays. Buyers needing a different interface protocol or a smaller physical form factor should consider other options.

12 Gbps SAS interface

The single specification that determines compatibility is the 12 Gbps SAS interface. Your system must provide a matching SAS connection and backplane support for 3.5 inch hot swap drives. Without this specific interface the drive cannot function.

Questions about this item

Does the 3.5 in form factor fit a standard 3.5 in drive bay or hot-swap tray?

The drive uses a 3.5 in form factor and mounts in a standard 3.5 in SAS hot-swap tray or fixed bay with four side screws.

What is the correct way to seat the 12 Gbps SAS connector during hot-swap insertion?

Align the dual-port SAS connector with the backplane, push the carrier straight in until the latch clicks, then verify the amber and green LEDs show ready before use.

When should the 256 MB cache drive be replaced under heavy 7200 RPM workloads?

Replace the drive when SMART attributes show rising reallocated sectors or the rated annual workload limit is approached, whichever occurs first.
